Colour experiments in Projection Mapping

September 21, 2011

Following on from yesterdays ‘re-discovery’ of projection mapping, I’m beginning a series of simple tests to form the basis of something bigger in the future (maybe) – but if I get these out of the way now, I should have a list of do’s and don’ts ready.

Hmm, its now 11pm and I’ve just had a crack at some colour/contrast/texture tests using an old PC and LCD projector. By the time I got set-up there wasn’t much time left for experiments. I did get chance to do a quick couple of ‘things’ using Photoshop and a few bits of cardboard.
the most unexpected discovery was my inability to document what I was doing – its dark in there, and my camera phone wont capture a decent image without the flash going off – then the flash wipes out the projection.

Not sure what I was doing here. I guess that I had to start with something so I threw some black and some white card down (horizontal) and a small stack of A4 white paper. The wall is actually magnolia but I’m projecting a black and white block as background (using Photoshop)

It was obvious in the first test that a black background works best, both physically (the card base), and the projected ‘dead-space’.
Here in this second test I used the pen tool in Photoshop to draw a point on each corner of the stack of A4 paper, coloured the new shape pink and added a small red inner glow to give it a border.

A new section

I’m thinking of adding the following ‘Seen today’ section to the foot of my journal entries. I cant / don’t always need to write everything-up, sometimes I just need to reference that I’ve found something interesting. I guess I want to show that I am exploring a lot of stuff out there, without having to over-analyse it or connect it to my work.
